Oldest General Store In WV Has A Fascinating History
In the rural community of Seneca Rocks, there’s a little general store where a visit feels like stepping back in time. Here you can pick up supplies, souvenirs, and have lunch while looking at one of the best views in West Virginia.
Harper's Old General Store is the oldest continuously running general store in West Virginia. It was built in 1902 by J. M. Harper, the current owner's great grandfather. The Harper family has roots in the Seneca Rocks area that go back ten generations.
The store has an antique cash register, metal ceilings, the original shelving, and the original hardwood floors, which require regular oiling for protection. Inside you can find camping supplies, souvenirs, and snacks.
The store also still keeps plumbing and electrical supplies and other such necessities for local farmers. Above the store you'll find the Front Porch Restaurant, where you can feast on pizza and sandwiches while gazing at Seneca Rocks, the only "true peak" in the state, and popular with climbers from all over.
